Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is a water-soluble, nonionic polymer commonly used as a thickener and water retention agent in a variety of applications (e.g., tile adhesives, wall putty, EIFS, etc.). A wide range of grades and custom formulations are available to meet a variety of industrial needs.
Cold water solubility.HPMC dissolves easily in cold water, reducing waiting time.
Thickness. Increases the viscosity and stability of the liquid.
Water retention. Extended open time also helps cement hydrate more fully.
Lubrication. HPMC used in cement improves workability and processability.
PH Stability.HPMC remains stable in the pH range of 3 to 11.
Non-ionic. More stable in aqueous solutions.
Thermal Gelation. When the temperature is too high, HPMC turns into a gel and when it cools down, it turns into a liquid again.
Air-entraining. HPMC for mortar helps to increase yield and improve workability.
Film-forming properties. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is water and oil repellent.
Wall putty
In water-resistant putty powder, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is mainly used to improve the water retention property, anti-cracking property and coating film property of internal and external wall construction, so as to make the surface of the putty fully hardened and leveled, and to improve the adhesion between the putty and the wall. It can improve the workability of putty powder, and at the same time, improve the anti-sagging ability and enhance the fluidity, so as to improve the construction efficiency. The high water retention of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose can extend the construction time of mortar. Putty powder without added cellulose ether has high viscosity, is not easy to scrape flat, and is prone to flow hanging or waste.
In mortar
In cement mortar, hpmc chemicals play the roles of water retention, thickening, delaying cement hydration and improving construction performance. Its good water retention makes the hydration of cement more adequate, can improve the wet viscosity of mortar, increase the bonding strength of mortar, and make the mortar better bonded with the substrate.
Gypsum
Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose plays an important role in water retention, setting and lubrication of gypsum products. Different gypsum has different effects on the performance of gypsum products, and thickening, water retention and retardation determine the quality of gypsum building materials.
External Wall Insulation System
In the external wall thermal insulation system, the use of hpmc can improve the constructability, water retention, open time, and regular physical properties of external wall thermal insulation mortar products, improve the bonding, especially for EPS/XPS and mineral wool boards, improve the bonding of mortar, prevent cracking, and enhance long-term durability.
Tile Adhesive
In tile adhesives, the high water retention of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose significantly improves bond strength, eliminating the need to pre-soak or wet tiles and foundations. The slurry can be applied for a long time, is fine and even, easy to apply and has good anti-slip properties.
Sealer
Adding hpmc to tile sealant can make the sealant have good edge bonding, low shrinkage and high abrasion resistance, which can protect the substrate from mechanical damage and avoid water infiltration negatively affecting the whole building.
Other aspects
HPMC powder is used as thickeners, stabilizers, emulsifiers, excipients, water retaining agents, film-forming agents in coatings, construction materials, paint strippers, agrochemicals, inks, textile printing and dyeing, ceramics, papermaking, cosmetics and other products.
